FAQs on gynaecomastia

What causes gynecomastia in men?

Gynaecomastia, also called “man boobs” refers to a condition where a man’s breast grows similar to that of a woman. The overgrowth of breast gland tissue results in women like breasts for a man or boy. This is a common condition seen in boys during their puberty and old men.

Gynaecomastia is caused due to imbalance of male and female hormones in a boy’s or man’s body. Drop in testosterone levels and increased oestrogen/estrogen leads to the overgrowth of breast gland tissue resulting in gynaecomastia condition.

Not really. Unless you are not happy with your physical look, you wouldn’t even need to see a doctor to get gynaecomastia treated. Gynaecomastia is absolutely a benign (non cancerous) condition.

If your doctor (plastic surgeon or a sexologist) confirms that you are low on your testosterone levels and that could be the reason for overgrowth of your breast tissues, yea, testosterone replacement therapy can help fix the issue. You will need to give your blood sample between 7am and 10am while the levels are at their highest from your vein to get to know your testosterone levels.

Normal testosterone levels range from 300 to 1,000 ng/dL (nanograms / deciLiter). Normal estrogen levels in men range from 10-50 picograms / deciLiter. Gynaecomastia develops when estrogen goes up and testosterone goes down from the mentioned range.

An enzyme called aromatase synthesises testosterone and converts it to estrogen.  Usually, when men get older, this enzyme consumes more testosterone (which is already in low production in the body) and converts it to estrogen causing larger imbalance that can result in man boobs.

Surgery is not the only option to get rid of gynaecomastia. Treatment or a natural solution for gynaecomastia depends on the reason why a man’s chest has grown like a woman’s breast.

Some remedies to get rid of gynaecomastia naturally include:

  1. Regular workout and low fat diet. If you have been putting on weight, you need to change your lifestyle to include low fat food, regular workout etc.
  2. Cutting down on any testosterone supplements if you are taking.
  3. Medications can also cause the imbalance of hormones in your body. You need to talk to your doctor if you notice such changes as a side effect of your medication.
  4. Reducing drugs and alcohol intake.

Surgical options for gynaecomastia:

  1. Liposuction – removes fat tissue from the chest area but not the breast glands.
  2. Mastectomy – Surgery is aimed at removing breast glands.

Depends on the individual. If you are happy with the way you look, you need not worry about it even a bit. But if you start losing confidence in yourself due to the man boobs, you should see a doctor.

Gynaecomastia that shows up during puberty can last from a few months to a couple of years. In the case of old men, there are very few chances that it will go away without medical or surgical intervention.

Gynaecomastia surgery can be either liposuction or mastectomy.

Liposuction involves removing the fat inside the chest area. Mastectomy removes the breast glands. To read more on gynaecomastia surgery, visit gynaecomastia article.

If you have put on weight and your breasts over grew as a part of it, then yes, you can workout to drop your weight and see your chest return to normal. If the overgrowth of breast tissue is due to any other reason such as hormone imbalance or due to medication etc, exercise may not help much.

Yes. Just like any other surgery, it involves its own risks but overall, it’s a safe procedure to get rid of the extra fat or the breast gland.

Foods such as salmon, tune can help reduce the inflammation in the body. Green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, fruits (citrus fruits like oranges, berries etc) help remove free radicals inside the body. They don’t help you getting rid of the condition totally but they help a little to control the growth and tenderness of your man boobs.
