Home remedies for hair fall – natural hair fall treatment

Hair loss, is one of the most common problems in men and few women. Around 85% of men face hair loss issue during their lifetime and around 40% of women have some kind of hair loss problem. They leave no stone unturned to stop hair loss / fall and to get back the hair on their heads. When no other non-surgical procedure works and when most the hair follicles are gone, the only option left would be ‘Hair Transplantation’. Hair transplant surgery can be done in 2 different ways:

  1. FUT – Follicular Unit Transplantation (Also called Follicular Unit Strip Surgery – FUSS)
  2. FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction.

In this article, let’s know about what one should know about the FUI procedure, it’s side effects and care to be taken during recovery.

What is FUT in hair transplantation?

In FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedure in which strips of (scalp) skin are taken from a place where the hair is present and the hair follicles are removed from the strip and then implanted into the bald area. The strips of scalp removed at the source of hair are called skin grafts. The number of grafts needed depends on the area where the transplantation is needed.

Cost of hair transplant in Chennai or in many cities across India is based on the number of grafts needed. Higher the number of grafts to be removed and implanted, higher is the amount of time it takes and the cost varies accordingly.

FUT hair transplant procedure involves

  1. Numbing the scalp with local anaesthesia
  2. Trimming the hair at the source site to less than 2mm.
  3. Drawing or marking the hair line and the area from where the grafts of skin are to be removed.
  4. The cosmetic surgeon (or plastic surgeon) then cuts the scalp and removes it carefully along with the hair follicles.
  5. Hair follicles are removed from the graft carefully individually or by finely cutting the graft into tiny pieces.
  6. The individual pieces or hair follicles will be inserted into the bald area with a special device that punctures hole in the scalp and then pushes the hair (with follicle) into it.
  7. The source or donor area from the grafts are removed will be stitched up and bandaged.
  8. The patient/person will be under antibiotics until the injuries on the scalp are healed.
  9. Once healed, the doctor may put the person onto medication that can help grow hair.

It usually takes up to a year to get a neat coverage of hair in the bald area.

Who is the right candidate for FUT hair transplant procedure?

If you want to undergo hair transplant procedure, you need to know whether you are the right candidate for the procedure. The most basic requirement is that you need to have some hair somewhere on your scalp (either back or sides).

  • Better to stop or quit smoking as smoking can hinder your body’s healing process.
  • Cosmetic surgeons prefer patients be above 25 years of age
  • Patients with Norwood pattern of hair loss are less likely to grow hair in the new area.
  • Higher the thickness of hair follicles, better would be the coverage
  • FUT is preferred to implant hair in the front part of the head

Side effects of FUT hair transplantation

  1. Just like any other invasive surgery, FUT hair transplant also poses a risk of infection. Odds of this happening are less than 1%
  2. If the transplant isn’t done with care and perfection, the newly growing hair may not look natural.
  3. Inflammation of the hair follicles
  4. Excessive bleeding during and after the surgery
  5. Numbness (this is usually temporary)
  6. Painful scalp
  7. Formation of cysts – usually when the hair follicles close for some reason, fats and oily deposits can turn to cysts under the scalp.

It is really important you do your homework in learning about the top cosmetic surgeons in your area so that your surgery goes well and there will be minimal post-operative complications. Recovery after hair transplant surgery

  1. The first and foremost thing is to follow the prescription. Most often your cosmetic surgeon will put you under antibiotics and pain medication for faster healing, reduce chances of infection and tolerate the pain.
  2. If you are a smoker, you will be advised to pause (if not quit) smoking as smoking hinders healing process of the bodily injuries.
  3. You may also be advised to stop consuming alcohol. Alcohol doesn’t really interfere with recovery but an unprecedented reaction with medications may happen.
  4. If you see any liquids oozing out from the source or destination area, you need to take an appointment with your surgeon immediately. Infection is often the reason if liquids mixed with blood ooze from the surgery site.
  5. Numbness may be experienced but should be temporary. If you are experiencing numbness even after few weeks after it has started, you should let your cosmetic surgeon know.
  6. Avoid any kind of contact with water during the first week of recovery.

FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction – A preferred method for hair transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction is the preferred method of hair transplant over FUT. FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure wherein patches of scalp are taken from a donor site and moved to the target (hairless) area. In case of FUE, hair follicles are taken from the donor location and then implanted in the target location. The target area can be any part of the body but most often it is the scalp.
