Liposuction
Liposuction surgery sculpts your body, eliminating unwanted pockets of exercise and diet-resistant fat from the buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts (including male breasts), back, arms and neck. Liposuction is often combined with other procedures to create a desired shape and is one of the safest and most popular cosmetic procedures.
Types of Liposuction
There are just a few different liposuction techniques. But what they all have in common is the use of a thin tube, called a cannula, connected to a vacuum to suction the fat from your body.
Tumescent liposuction is the most common technique. Your surgeon injects a sterile solution into the area where the fat is to be removed. It consists of saline — which is salt water – along with lidocaine and epinephrine. The solution makes it easier to suction the fat with less blood loss and pain.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or UAL, uses sound wave energy under your skin to rupture the cell walls of the fat. This liquefies the fat so it can be suctioned out.
Laser-assisted liposuction, or SmartLipo, uses a laser to produce a burst of energy to liquefy the fat.
Power ASsisted Liposuction (PAS) – The device used has an electrical component that moves quickly around the fat tissue to disconnect it from other fat tissue and muscles so that more fat can be removed easily.
Areas from where fat can be removed using liposuction
- Abdomen
- Love handles and sides of lower back
- Thighs (both on the inside and out, saddle bags)
- Near the triceps
- Chest (for men)
- Chin
- Inner side of the knees
- Outer side of elbows
Are you the right candidate to undergo liposuction?
You should note that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It should be used to get rid of fat that you are not able to get rid of through regular workout and diet. Otherwise, there is always a high possibility that you get back the removed fat and lose all the effects of liposuction.
You should meet certain criteria before you consider yourself the right candidate for liposuction procedure:
- You should be a non-smoker. You should quit smoking or pause at least a couple of months ahead of the procedure. Smoking hinders recovery of the body from injuries (either surgical or trauma induced).
- Your skin should have its elasticity. If your skin isn’t elastic enough, it can sag after removing the procedure which may require you to undergo another surgery to remove the excess skin.
- After getting rid of the fat, you should make sure that you will have a healthier lifestyle that includes regular workout, eating fiber rich food and taking in only the required amount of calories.

How long does the results of liposuction procedure last?
Depending on the area the surgery is performed, it may take around 3 months to 6 months to get into desired shape. Your body needs time to get rid of the solution that is injected, and the skin needs to tighten after the body absorbs all the accumulated edema.
If you continue with your unhealthy lifestyle, the results of the procedure may vanish soon enough and the fat may return. If you take good care of what you eat and your workout, the results of liposuction lasts for a very long time.
